Gutter Guard in The Gap

The Gap occupies a valley in Brisbane's north-west, hemmed by the foothills of the D'Aguilar Range and bordering the bushland around Enoggera Reservoir and the national park beyond. It's named for the natural gap in the ridgeline that Waterworks Road passes through, and it stayed largely rural until suburban development spread west through the 1960s and 70s. The surrounding protected bushland permanently bounded the suburb, which is why it remains one of Brisbane's greenest, and why its homes sit directly against forest.

This creates the most demanding gutter environment we work in around Brisbane. The tree cover isn't ornamental street planting but mature dry eucalypt forest: stringybarks and gums that shed bark in long strips, drop leaf continuously, and produce fine litter that a coarse guard simply passes through. A Gap gutter can refill within weeks of a clean during a dry, windy spring.

The bushfire dimension is real. Properties on Brisbane's western bushland fringe fall within areas mapped as bushfire prone, and fire-agency guidance for such homes consistently stresses clearing gutters of leaf litter and screening gutters and roof openings against ember attack. Most homes lost in bushfires are lit by embers landing in accumulated debris rather than by direct flame, and a gutter full of dry eucalypt leaf sitting against timber eaves is the textbook example. Access compounds all of it. On steep Gap blocks the downhill gutter can sit two storeys above sloping ground, so this isn't a job to attempt on a ladder. And if it can't be done safely, in practice it doesn't get done at all.

We adapt accordingly.
