Gutter Guard in Redcliffe

Redcliffe occupies a peninsula projecting into Moreton Bay, and almost every property in it sits within a few kilometres of open salt water. That single fact drives most of what we do here. Onshore winds carry salt aerosol well inland, and it settles on roofs, gutters and any fixing exposed to it. Steel corrodes. Aluminium doesn't. Owners who fitted a budget guard often learn this the hard way when rust bleeds from the screw heads down a perfectly good Colourbond gutter.

The second factor is the vegetation. The foreshore is planted heavily with Norfolk Island pines, a defining feature of the esplanade from Woody Point through Redcliffe and Scarborough, alongside casuarinas and palms in the surrounding streets. These species shed fine needle litter continuously rather than seasonally. Needles are small enough to pass through coarse guards and fine enough to knit into a dense mat once they're in a trough, so gutters on foreshore streets fill faster than the same house would inland.

The third is the age of the housing stock. Redcliffe was the site of Queensland's first European settlement in 1824 and grew up as a bayside holiday town, and the post-war decades filled the peninsula with the modest brick, fibro and timber homes that still make up much of Redcliffe, Margate and Clontarf. Many keep timber fascia, timber eaves lining and original gutter brackets. When a salt-exposed gutter overflows repeatedly, water tracks back behind the gutter into that timber, and the repair bill climbs quickly from a maintenance issue to a carpentry one.

For peninsula owners the practical result is that gutters need clearing more often, ladder work is riskier in the wind, and material choice is not optional.
